Enjoying heart-shaped grits and quiche on the gorgeous patio of the Mountain Magnolia Inn in Hot Springs, NC as I blog this. Go there, people!

This massive pine tree fell and took a gigantic rock with it! That rock has been suspended there in the roots for a very long time.

Well lookie here – crossing under I-40. Notice the white AT blaze on the left pole.

The Trail goes right under I-40.

The kitchen shack at Standing Bear Hostel. It had lots of recycled character.

Old plane wreckage along the Trail. It was spewn about all along the incline.

Other than ONE blister (that is now healed, thanks to my new shoes), this was the only other casualty sustained by my old shoes. My toenail is finally almost ready to fall off :(

Enjoying a hot spring mineral bath at Hot Springs Resort and Spa in NC…During a thunderstorm with hail.

I look terrible, but that’s what getting up at 5:30 in the morning looks like. Worth it though!

I was so ready to rent a house boat and relax. Not enough time though.

Hikers try to help each other out.

On top of Albert Mountain

Hard to tell, but that rock face goes straight up. I had to toss the trekking poles up ahead and scramble with my feet and hands to get up.

Ready to roll after packing up camp.

The guys left me flowers to say thanks for holding their gear while they ate and to cheer up my super dreary Budget Inn Motel room. Sweet hikers.

Many hikers who are frustrated with their hiking shoes toss them on this famous tree at the Mountain Crossings Outfitters at Neel Gap – either because they gave up, or because their shoes tore up their feet and they bought new ones.

Stayed at the “Beaver Cabin” on the right with a father and his two daughters, also hiking the Trail.

Walked out of the woods at Neel Gap, after Blood Mountain, and was graciously handed a nice cold beer! Gulped it down in earnest.

The Trail goes straight through the building.

Well, so much for a view! Rained almost all day.
